Are you feeling it? In the book This Is An Uprising this is called The Moment of The Whirlwind. When hundreds or thousands of people are pouring their effort, energy and passion into one new, exciting, and powerful thing. It is in these times that we can significantly build our movement, broaden our movement, and win historic campaigns. It is exciting to be here with you, and I’m glad you are a part of it.

• New Flyers & Posters – Climate Strike

  You can pick up flyers and posters tomorrow at the Sierra Club (1821 SE Ankeny) where an Art Build will be happening tomorrow (Saturday) between 1.30pm – 4pm. Or come into the 350PDX office Mon-Fri 9-5, or text Chris (971-712-4152) to get some delivered to you!

  I have printed thousands of flyers but I keep running out because you volunteers are so amazing at giving them out. • Comfort Captains! Help us make the festival sittable!

  The Climate Strike Festival is taking place outside OMSI near the river, which is an idyllic general location, but the specific lot we have has a gravel floor. Not the most pleasant for sitting on! We will have enough chairs for workshops and general sitting, but to make this a comfortable, fun, enjoyable festival, we need comfortable seating! Do you have access to beanbags, outdoor carpets, cushioned chairs, sofas, straw bales, fake grass, or anything to make it nicer? We can set things up the day before so you can drop anything off then and pick it up after the festival is over. Any questions let me know – chris@350pdx.org. Thanks!

• Volunteer on the day – Climate Strike

  One of our biggest needs right now is for folks to step up and take a shift volunteering on the day. This is a grassroots, non-corporation-funded festival and we’ll need to pull together as a community to make it happen. It will be scrappy, but through that scrappiness it will be powerful and beautiful. Sign up here.

  Another opportunity to join Bonnie McKinlay’s excellent training. This is a great introduction to civil disobedience and is relevant for those who may wish to someday risk arrest, those who want to support others risking arrest, or just for those who want a greater understanding of why civil disobedience is an effective tactic. • Portland Youth Climate Council – Portland Tree Code

  The city gives us a 3 min slot to speak so please arrive early. The trees need you!

  Support our Climate Strike youth colleagues in the PYCC. Wear Green. “If you or I want to cut down a tree, we must pay a fee to acquire a permit. Owners of commercial and industrial land do not. That means they are allowed – by the City – to cut down trees whenever they want without protection for those trees. We will be asking the city to change this.”

• Know Your Rights Training

  Wed Sept 11, 6:30PM – 8:30PM @ Cramer Hall Room 271, PSU

  The Civil Liberties Defense Center, CLDC, host this important training.
  Learn what your constitutional rights are and how they apply to protest, direct action and demonstration. Learn the “magic words” to say while interacting with law enforcement in order to keep you and your friends safe. We will walk you through the legal system and what to expect if you are arrested. Finally this training focuses on ways the government and law enforcement try to suppress our movements, and how you can stay resilient to repression.

• Beach Party to #StopJordanCove

  Thurs Sept 12, 5:30PM – 7:30PM @ Poet’s Beach, west side of Marquam Bridge
  Join us for a Beach Party to take action to protect the Southern Oregon coast from the Jordan Cove LNG export terminal! We will give you more information about the Coastal Zone Management Act review of Jordan Cove LNG and help you write comments to the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development asking them to deny Jordan Cove LNG. In the past month, the United States has been ravaged by a series of shooters influenced by the far-right. An increasingly dangerous pattern in these shootings is the influence of eco-fascism on the shooters (re: El Paso, Christchurch).

Eco-fascism is a form of environmentalism influenced by Malthusian theory and the idea that we must “get rid of people” to protect our ever-dwindling resources. See this article for a deeper look into the growing white nationalism and environmentalism.

We can’t let the far-right co-opt our environmental struggle. Fighting for climate justice means fighting for racial justice, migrant justice, and economic justice. Fighting for climate justice means fighting for an anti-fascist future for all of us.

This Saturday far right groups will descend on Portland, and anti-fascist counter-protesters will be there to meet them. These protests have often turned violent so be careful if you’re downtown on Saturday. For a peaceful way to show solidarity there is The Exchange: A Multicultural Day Market happening in SE Portland from 12-6pm.

• Last Weekend at Alberta Street Fair

  The wonderful Eileen, Amy and 10 other signature gatherers collected 869 petition signatures for the Stop Zenith campaign. Incredible work, thank you amazing volunteers!

• In The News: Revealed: FBI and police monitoring Oregon anti-pipeline activists

  “Law enforcement groups, including the FBI, have been monitoring opponents of a natural gas infrastructure project in Oregon and circulated intelligence to an email list that included a Republican-aligned anti-environmental PR operative, emails obtained by the Guardian show.”

  Oregon’s public officials should be focused on how they can protect our communities from the Jordan Cove fracked gas project, not work hand in hand with the private fossil fuel corporation backing it by spying on our community.

  We won’t back down. We’ll continue to work in coalition with groups across the state on building momentum to stop Jordan Cove once and for all.

  TAKE ACTION – Call Governor Kate Brown (503-378-4582) to tell her what you think about this news that Oregon public officials are working to silence our communities and to ask her to stop Jordan Cove for good.

  Do you have experience running events, getting permits, or being involved with big public mobilizations? • Help Needed: Food Trucks or Food Donations Assistance

  Do you have a connection to someone with a food truck, or a restaurant who might want to help provide food for striking young people and adults on Sept 20 or through the week of action? • Help needed for the Multnomah Days Parade!

  Want to march in a parade raising awareness of the Climate Strike? This is your chance! Marching in this parade with the 350PDX Southwest Team is a wonderful opportunity for someone new to the movement and for seasoned veterans both to practice having a visual impact in support of the Climate Movement. The parade is just a 20 minute walk and hundreds will see our message.

• Climate Justice Knows No Borders: Portland to the Philippines

  Join PCHRP (Portland Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines) for this open house. The Philippines was just named the deadliest country for environmental defenders with 30 killings in 2018 alone. As one of the most biodiverse and resource rich countries in the world, the Philippines is a target of foreign mining, logging agricultural industries committing corporate theft and perpetuating the global climate crisis.

• Summer Appeal

  Last month was the hottest June in recorded history on Earth. The planet has been heating up, but our activism has been too. From the Portland Clean Energy Fund, to our fight against fossil fuel infrastructure, from new campaigns on the Green New Deal and Transportation Justice, to continuing work on ensuring we center climate justice in all our organizing, 350PDX has never been so active. New volunteers are joining every week, and new opportunities, partnerships and campaigns are popping up all the time. But all this activity takes resources, staff time, and money.

  Donations from supporters like you keep our movement alive and growing. We are in the midst of our summer appeal and we have set a goal to raise $15,000 by July 31st. AND the 350PDX Board will match the first $6,000 raised!! (Thanks Board!)

• Huge Zenith Public Hearing Last Night

  Last night around 500 people showed up to tell City Council to oppose the expansion of the Zenith Energy tar sands terminal – see OPB article here. Mayor Ted Wheeler, Commissioner Chloe Eudaly and Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty heard testimony from local organizations and individuals and responded to questions. They gave strongly worded responses, but until those words are turned into action we will not let up the pressure on the City Council! 350PDX demanded the City deny any upcoming permits; the City work with DEQ to increase scrutiny on this project; the City implement the fossil fuel zoning codes we passed in 2016; and the City place an immediate stop work order on Zenith’s operations!
