350PDX Weekly Update – 2 weeks until Climate Strike! – Sept 6 2019

Hi everyone,

Are you feeling it? In the book This Is An Uprising this is called The Moment of The Whirlwind. When hundreds or thousands of people are pouring their effort, energy and passion into one new, exciting, and powerful thing. It is in these times that we can significantly build our movement, broaden our movement, and win historic campaigns. It is exciting to be here with you, and I’m glad you are a part of it.

Here’s your 350PDX weekly update!

I’m temporarily dispensing with my usual Volunteer Boards to present our new Climate Strike Volunteer Opportunities board. Lots of stuff to do, and all hands needed on deck!

Updates

  • New Flyers & Posters – Climate Strike

You can pick up flyers and posters tomorrow at the Sierra Club (1821 SE Ankeny) where an Art Build will be happening tomorrow (Saturday) between 1.30pm – 4pm. Or come into the 350PDX office Mon-Fri 9-5, or text Chris (971-712-4152) to get some delivered to you!

See the Outreach Guide here, and download and print flyers yourself here.

I have printed thousands of flyers but I keep running out because you volunteers are so amazing at giving them out. I’m running out of money in the outreach budget to print more, so if you would like to donate to get more flyers and posters printed please let me know at chris@350pdx.org and we can make that happen. Thank you!!

Requests

  • Comfort Captains! Help us make the festival sittable!

The Climate Strike Festival is taking place outside OMSI near the river, which is an idyllic general location, but the specific lot we have has a gravel floor. Not the most pleasant for sitting on! We will have enough chairs for workshops and general sitting, but to make this a comfortable, fun, enjoyable festival, we need comfortable seating! Do you have access to beanbags, outdoor carpets, cushioned chairs, sofas, straw bales, fake grass, or anything to make it nicer? We can set things up the day before so you can drop anything off then and pick it up after the festival is over. Any questions let me know – chris@350pdx.org. Thanks!

  • Volunteer on the day – Climate Strike

One of our biggest needs right now is for folks to step up and take a shift volunteering on the day. This is a grassroots, non-corporation-funded festival and we’ll need to pull together as a community to make it happen. It will be scrappy, but through that scrappiness it will be powerful and beautiful. Sign up here.

  • Share the fundraiser on social media – Climate Strike

The scale and scope and the timeline we are putting this Strike Rally, March and Festival together is unprecedented for 350PDX, and to make it happen we need your help. Please take a moment to share the youth’s fundraiser on your Facebook, Twitter or just email it to your friends, and write why this personally matters to you. See the fundraiser here. Thank you!

Opportunities

  • Civil Disobedience Workshop

    TOMORROW Sat Sept 7, 1:00PM – 6:00PM @ NE Portland
Another opportunity to join Bonnie McKinlay’s excellent training. This is a great introduction to civil disobedience and is relevant for those who may wish to someday risk arrest, those who want to support others risking arrest, or just for those who want a greater understanding of why civil disobedience is an effective tactic. RSVP for location details -> contact Bonnie: (503) 705-1943, or goto350pdx@gmail.com

  • Portland Youth Climate Council – Portland Tree Code

Wed Sept 11, 9:30AM @ City Hall Chamber, 1221 SW 4th Ave, Portland

The city gives us a 3 min slot to speak so please arrive early. The trees need you!

Support our Climate Strike youth colleagues in the PYCC. Wear Green. “If you or I want to cut down a tree, we must pay a fee to acquire a permit. Owners of commercial and industrial land do not. That means they are allowed – by the City – to cut down trees whenever they want without protection for those trees. We will be asking the city to change this.”

  • Know Your Rights Training

    Wed Sept 11, 6:30PM – 8:30PM @ Cramer Hall Room 271, PSU

The Civil Liberties Defense Center, CLDC, host this important training.
Learn what your constitutional rights are and how they apply to protest, direct action and demonstration. Learn the “magic words” to say while interacting with law enforcement in order to keep you and your friends safe. We will walk you through the legal system and what to expect if you are arrested. Finally this training focuses on ways the government and law enforcement try to suppress our movements, and how you can stay resilient to repression.
  • Beach Party to #StopJordanCove

    Thurs Sept 12, 5:30PM – 7:30PM @ Poet’s Beach, west side of Marquam Bridge
Join us for a Beach Party to take action to protect the Southern Oregon coast from the Jordan Cove LNG export terminal! We will give you more information about the Coastal Zone Management Act review of Jordan Cove LNG and help you write comments to the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development asking them to deny Jordan Cove LNG. Facebook event here

Thank you all for the work that you do, and for being part of this organized and Oregonian movement,
Chris – 350PDX Volunteer & Communications Coordinator

350PDX Weekly Update – Strike Countdown! August 28 2019

Hi everyone,

The Amazon is on fire, and the DNC voted against allowing a Climate Debate, but at the same time presidential candidates are coming out with frankly amazing climate plans, and our local movement is growing in number and energy every day. In many ways we’ve never been closer to a climate justice revolution, and I’m so glad you’re here with us.

Here’s your 350PDX weekly update!

I’m temporarily dispensing with my usual Volunteer Boards to present our new Climate Strike Volunteer Opportunities board. Lots of stuff to do, and all hands needed on deck!

Updates

  • Climate Strike Outreach

We have a big stack of flyers and posters here in the office just waiting to get handed out! Come in any time 10-5 Mon-Fri and pick up as many as you’d like, and we also have a team of volunteers who are happy to deliver flyers to you outside of work hours and all over the Portland metro area! Text Chris 971-712-4152.

Also check out the website for a load of outreach advice and printable flyers and posters.

  • Labor Day Solidarity

Mon Sept 2 is Labor Day, and with the labor movement-inspired Climate Strike looming, this is a great opportunity to show solidarity and form closer connections with our friends in the labor movement.

    1. Attend the Labor Day Picnic at Oaks Amusement Park 10am-5pm (Facebook event)

    2. Volunteer at the picnic for the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) – RSVP and more details here

  • ClimateStrikeOregon.org is live!

An amazing volunteer, Dustin, made this amazing website where all events in Oregon on Sept 20 and during the week of action can live. Please share it far and wide!
If you know of any events happening as part of the week of action that aren’t on this website, please ask them to register their event on the site, so they can get some widespread publicity from all the outreach we’re all doing!

Requests

  • Festival of Dankness – Climate Strike Volunteers

On Saturday Aug 31st we’re partnering with a beer festival and we have the opportunity to do lots of outreach to the 500-1000 attendees to turn them into 500-1000 climate strikers. We need your help to do this! This means talking to beer drinkers about the strike and just having conversations with folks about how they feel about the climate crisis and offering them opportunities to get involved. You’ll get trained up on how to do this! I’ll be there and so will a few other 350PDX staff and volunteers, and if you join us you’ll get beer, an invitation to a big volunteer party next week, and a fun Saturday afternoon. 2-7pm but come for any of those hours. Let Chris know! Chris@350pdx.org or 971-712-4152 (text is best)

  • Climate Strike Help Needed

Check the big growing list of stuff to help with here! We’ll also need help on the day, and I’ll send a separate dedicated email about that soon! But if you can’t wait, give me an email and I’ll make a note!

  • Fundraising – Climate Strike Help Needed

The ideas are in place and the whole strike is coming together, but we need money to pull this thing off! Are you a fundraising pro, or even a development beginner? Contact Ashley@350pdx.org, or come to the mass meeting tonight (see below) and join the fundraising team!

350PDX Weekly Update – Eco-fascism on the rise… – August 14 2019

Hi everyone,

In the past month, the United States has been ravaged by a series of shooters influenced by the far-right. An increasingly dangerous pattern in these shootings is the influence of eco-fascism on the shooters (re: El Paso, Christchurch).

Eco-fascism is a form of environmentalism influenced by Malthusian theory and the idea that we must “get rid of people” to protect our ever-dwindling resources. See this article for a deeper look into the growing white nationalism and environmentalism.

We can’t let the far-right co-opt our environmental struggle. Fighting for climate justice means fighting for racial justice, migrant justice, and economic justice. Fighting for climate justice means fighting for an anti-fascist future for all of us.

This Saturday far right groups will descend on Portland, and anti-fascist counter-protesters will be there to meet them. These protests have often turned violent so be careful if you’re downtown on Saturday. For a peaceful way to show solidarity there is The Exchange: A Multicultural Day Market happening in SE Portland from 12-6pm.

Here’s your 350PDX weekly update!

Remember to check out the Volunteer Boards for all our current volunteer opportunities, including Tasks, Roles, Representing 350PDX, Stuff we need. And let me know any suggestions or additions!

Updates

  • Last Weekend at Alberta Street Fair

The wonderful Eileen, Amy and 10 other signature gatherers collected 869 petition signatures for the Stop Zenith campaign. Incredible work, thank you amazing volunteers!
Want to do tabling and outreach like this? There are loads of opportunities! Let chris@350pdx.org know!

  • In The News: Revealed: FBI and police monitoring Oregon anti-pipeline activists

“Law enforcement groups, including the FBI, have been monitoring opponents of a natural gas infrastructure project in Oregon and circulated intelligence to an email list that included a Republican-aligned anti-environmental PR operative, emails obtained by the Guardian show.”

Oregon’s public officials should be focused on how they can protect our communities from the Jordan Cove fracked gas project, not work hand in hand with the private fossil fuel corporation backing it by spying on our community.

We won’t back down. We’ll continue to work in coalition with groups across the state on building momentum to stop Jordan Cove once and for all.

TAKE ACTION – Call Governor Kate Brown (503-378-4582) to tell her what you think about this news that Oregon public officials are working to silence our communities and to ask her to stop Jordan Cove for good.

Requests

  • Help Needed: Permits and Logistics for Climate Strike

Thank you!

  • Help Needed: Food Trucks or Food Donations Assistance

Do you have a connection to someone with a food truck, or a restaurant who might want to help provide food for striking young people and adults on Sept 20 or through the week of action? Or do you want to do outreach to food trucks to see if they’d be willing to help? Please let me (chris@350pdx.org) know!

  • Help needed for the Multnomah Days Parade!

Want to march in a parade raising awareness of the Climate Strike? This is your chance! 350PDX Weekly Update – July 31 2019

Hi everyone,

As summer reaches its height we have a fairly quiet newsletter for you this week. It’s a great time to enjoy the Oregon outdoors, but also a great time to jump into the climate movement – especially with the upcoming Climate Strike (come to the Aug 6 General Meeting to get plugged in!).

Updates

  • Summer Appeal

We are so grateful for all the amazing support we have seen for our 2019 summer appeal! We are SO CLOSE to our $15,000 goal and today is the LAST DAY to make your contribution count towards it! We are currently at 85% of our goal. Please help us with this final push!

With just a few more generous contributions we will reach our goal and can continue to expand our work in the climate justice movement. Thank you for all of your support, we can’t do this organizing without you!

We will be taking on more campaigns, training more volunteers for leadership roles in the movement, and navigating the political landscape of the 2020 election cycle. Collaborating with experienced volunteers to assist in the planning and implementation of our development plan is crucial to sustain our growth. The committee is currently made up of two board members and 1 staff. Committee members must be able to commit to 2-10 hours per month, meeting approximately every other week with flexible scheduling. This could be a great way for you or someone you know to contribute to the climate justice movement! Please email ashley@350pdx.org if interested. Thank you!

Weekly Update – July 23 2019

Hi everyone,

The votes are in from last week’s poll, and 71% said you preferred this simple newsletter format, so I’m sticking with it! Any improvements or suggestions are always welcome, just give me an email – chris@350pdx.org.

And here’s your 350PDX weekly update!

Remember to check out the Volunteer Boards for all our current volunteer opportunities, including Tasks, Roles, Representing 350PDX, Stuff we need. And let me know any suggestions or additions!

Updates

  • Summer Appeal

After a year of staff transitions and some internal restructuring, I am excited to refocus on building this grassroots movement through more volunteer orientations, general meetings, skills trainings and making it easier for new and existing volunteers to take part in a range of meaningful, effective climate action. It takes resources to run an organization like 350PDX, from organizing the upcoming Climate Strike, to fixing our website, to mobilizing hundreds of people at Zenith hearings, to supporting volunteer teams.

Please consider giving today to keep our people-powered movement moving forward. We only have less than two weeks of the summer appeal. So far we have had 50 individual contributions. Will you help us get that number up to 70 individual donations by the end of this week? Thank you! — Chris

  • Strategic Planning is Underway!

For over 8 hours on Sunday, 350PDX volunteer leaders, board and staff kicked off this year’s strategic planning process, looking to plan out the direction of 350PDX for the next 18 months. These were just very initial conversations setting up the framework (here’s the framework for those interested), and much of the deeper strategy planning will be done by volunteer teams themselves in the coming months. Interested in getting involved, and have experience in strategic planning or creating inclusive processes? Join the Strategic Planning Committee! Email lucy@350pdx.org.

  • Welcome to new 350PDX board members!

Welcome to new board members Anaïs Tuepker, Jamie Pang, and Jordon Lee. As we grow the board to a sustainable size, we will maintain interim leadership roles. Deb Lev will be serving as interim board president and Allyse Heartwell will be serving as interim vice-president.

Requests

  • Calling all web designers / developers!

The time has come to give our website a revamp. Over the next few weeks/months the Communications Team will be updating the structure, content and design of our current website, to make it look less like 350pdx.org, and more like 350seattle.org, mn350.org, or just 350.org. We use WordPress and I’m looking for someone with development / design skills to help us along, potentially migrating a theme, or just customizing our current theme. Please email chris@350pdx.org! Thanks!

  • Help needed for the Multnomah Daze Parade!

The 350PDX Southwest Neighborhood Team is marching again in this year’s parade. They need at least 15 people able and willing to carry signs, props and puppets for an approx 20 minute march. The SW team will have plenty of items to carry, so no need for people to bring their own signs. Join us in spreading the word about the urgency to switch from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. The theme on this day will be “All Hands Needed ~ Heal the Earth“.

Sounds like a fun time? Contact: Bob Kaminski, robertwkaminski@gmail.org; Text: 510-610-1705, to let them know you can come!
When – Meet at 9:30 AM, Saturday, August 17. (Parade begins at 10:00 AM)
Where – Meet across the street from the defunct Andy’s Garage located at 7991 SW Capitol Highway, Portland, 97219

Updates

  • Summer Appeal

Last month was the hottest June in recorded history on Earth. The planet has been heating up, but our activism has been too. From the Portland Clean Energy Fund, to our fight against fossil fuel infrastructure, from new campaigns on the Green New Deal and Transportation Justice, to continuing work on ensuring we center climate justice in all our organizing, 350PDX has never been so active. New volunteers are joining every week, and new opportunities, partnerships and campaigns are popping up all the time. But all this activity takes resources, staff time, and money.

Donations from supporters like you keep our movement alive and growing. We are in the midst of our summer appeal and we have set a goal to raise $15,000 by July 31st. AND the 350PDX Board will match the first $6,000 raised!! (Thanks Board!)

  • Huge Zenith Public Hearing Last Night

Last night around 500 people showed up to tell City Council to oppose the expansion of the Zenith Energy tar sands terminal – see OPB article here. Mayor Ted Wheeler, Commissioner Chloe Eudaly and Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty heard testimony from local organizations and individuals and responded to questions. They gave strongly worded responses, but until those words are turned into action we will not let up the pressure on the City Council! 350PDX demanded the City deny any upcoming permits; the City work with DEQ to increase scrutiny on this project; the City implement the fossil fuel zoning codes we passed in 2016; and the City place an immediate stop work order on Zenith’s operations! Read 350PDX’s testimony and demands here. Want to get more involved? Come along to the next Fossil Fuel Resistance team meeting, Thurs July 25, 6pm – details here.
