Hi everyone,

We wanted to take a moment to honor forest defender Manuel “Tortuguita” Páez Terán, who was killed by the Atlanta Police a few weeks ago. Tortuguita was one of many defending the Weelaunee Forest and Atlanta community from the Atlanta Police Foundation, who are preparing to build “Cop City” — a $90 million police-military compound on stolen Muscogee land. Our hearts are with Tortuguita’s loved ones and community, and the Atlanta forest defenders. It is horrifying that land defenders — those who are standing up for their communities, justice, and our collective future — continue to face such brutality from the police. Fights for abolition, Indigenous sovereignty, and environmental justice are deeply connected, and we must keep showing up for folks on the frontlines. May Tortuguita rest in power.

Please see this list of ways to support the Atlanta Forest Defenders and Tortuguita’s family:

Take action to stop the GTN XPress pipeline expansion

For years, communities in the Pacific Northwest have been standing up to fossil fuel corporations. Now, TC Energy (the company behind Keystone XL) is trying to quietly expand the GTN pipeline. This proposed expansion project is called GTN XPress, and would result in more than 3.24 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

Ways you can take action:

Tell your OR Senators and Representatives to Support Climate Justice in the 2023 Legislative Session

The urgency of the climate crisis requires bold and meaningful action at every level of government. Right now, we have an opportunity to create important change across all of Oregon in the 2023 Legislative Session, which runs from January to June. 350PDX enters the 2023 State Legislative session ready to support and advocate for bills that nurture the type of changes we need for a more climate-stable future. Please join us in contacting your Oregon State Senator and Representative to highlight these important bills and ask that they are made a priority this session.

Take Action to Stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline

The Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) company has spent years endangering communities throughout Appalachia and damaging the region’s water with their destructive gas pipeline project. But there is still time to stop them. Last year, federal courts found that the United States Forest Service (USFS) and other agencies improperly granted the MVP approvals to cross the Jefferson National Forest for a second time and asked the agency to again review the MVP’s threats to water resources in the forest.

USFS is accepting public comments on its updated analysis of Mountain Valley Pipeline’s environmental impacts through February 6th. Tell Biden and the United States Forest Service to reject any new approvals for the Mountain Valley Pipeline!

Sign the Petition & Write to Congress: Restore Federal Recognition for the Chinook Indian Nation

In 2001, the Chinook Nation obtained federal recognition from the U.S. government. However, celebration turned into heartbreak when the U.S. government rescinded this recognition eighteen months later. The Chinook Indian Nation was essentially declared nonexistent in the eyes of the government. The nation has been unable to access programs and resources to which federally recognized tribes are entitled. Congress has both the power and authority to recognize tribes. We are calling on our elected officials to do what’s right and end this humanitarian crisis: Stop the genocide and federally recognize the Chinook Indian Nation.

Events & Opportunities

TONIGHT: Join the Pre-Strike Kickoff to Support Portland City Laborers

Wed, Feb 1, 10pm-12am — 5001 N Columbia Blvd, Portland

The Portland City Laborers intend to go on strike when the clock switches over from Wednesday to Thursday. After three years of working through a pandemic, and ongoing pandemic-related crises, the City is unwilling to recognize its workers’ sacrifice and offer safer working conditions, wages that account for inflation and the rising cost of living, and most of all, respect. Unless the City of Portland find the means to bargain a contract that meets the needs and demands of its workers, many diligent City workers are going to walk off the job at 12:00 AM.

Please join City Laborers at the Columbia Blvd Wastewater Treatment Plant for a Pre-Strike Kickoff to prepare that 24/7 picket line and support these brave workers. Learn more here.

Grab the Gavel: We Have the Power

Wed, Feb 8, 8:45am — outside Portland City Hall (1221 SW 4th)

Join the Scrub the Hub coalition for Grab the Gavel: We Have the Power, a rally outside of City Hall on Feb 8th. Mayor Ted Wheeler and some City Commissioners think they have all the power to make decisions about Zenith Energy and our climate health, but we need to show them that we have PEOPLE POWER. We’re calling on the City to rescind Zenith’s Land Use Compatibility Statement and prioritize the health and well-being of frontline communities over private profit. Wear red, and go through security and into the chambers at 9:15. The City Council meeting begins at 9:30.

Facilitated by Barbara Ford and Elva Redwood.

People’s Hearing on GTN XPress

Mon, Feb 13, 5-6:30pm — on zoom (learn more here)

FERC (the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) didn’t hold a public hearing for community members to weigh-in on GTN XPress, so communities are coming together to host our own. On Monday, February 13th, join the People’s Hearing to Stop GTN XPress to give your testimony and hear from community leaders and advocates from across the Northwest (including US Senator Jeff Merkley). Your testimony will be shared directly with FERC to send a strong message that people in the Northwest oppose new fossil fuel infrastructure. GTN XPress is moving quickly through the federal permitting process because it requires less approval from state agencies than new pipeline projects. But right now, we have an opportunity to stop the GTN XPress project, and we need your support. Register for the Zoom link here.

Training: Facilitating Effective Meetings & Events

Thurs, Feb 16, 6pm-7:30pm — on zoom (register here)

The Pacific Northwest Forest Climate Aliance is hosting an activist training series over the coming months to support deepening skills in facilitation & running meetings, helping resolve conflicts, making organizing spaces more accessible, and navigating burnout & building collective resilience. Each month from February through May, they’ll take a deep dive with experienced trainers into these important but often unrecognized skills. Register here for the first training on Feb 16, where you’ll learn about how to facilitate effective meetings.

News & Updates

Victory for Wild Salmon!

This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that Clean Water Act (“404c”) protections will safeguard the headwaters of Alaska’s Nushagak and Kvichak Rivers — meaning that Bristol Bay’s headwaters are now off-limits to Pebble Mine. Bristol Bay’s headwaters are a nursery sustaining the world’s greatest remaining wild sockeye salmon fishery, so this is a huge win for protecting wild salmon. “The EPA’s decision comes after more than a decade of relentless campaigning by the people of Bristol Bay and members of our Bristol Bay Defense Fund coalition, led by the United Tribes of Bristol Bay” – Wild Salmon Center (learn more from them here!)

In love and gratitude,
