You may be wondering what to make of the Manchin-Schumer Climate Deal that came out last week and what comes next for our movement. It’s true that the bill includes important investments in clean energy and high taxes on big business, which are wins for us. However, we can’t ignore that the bill opens up 620 million acres of NEW oil and gas lease sales and permitting for fossil fuel projects, offsetting many of the benefits of those clean energy investments, and that the bill leans heavily on false climate solutions like Carbon Capture and Storage, nuclear energy, and carbon trading, and could have devastating consequences for frontline communities (see this statement from the Indigenous Environmental Network).

So what now? In short, our demands remain the same. We must hold the Biden Administration and the Federal House and Senate accountable and reject false climate solutions. We won’t stop fighting until Biden declares a climate emergency, stops approving fossil fuel leases, exports, and infrastructure, and enacts a just transition to renewable energy.

We’re ramping up our organizing around national-level climate justice issues, and we’re excited for you to join us in the streets soon. To make this work possible, we’re currently hiring a National Fossil Fuels Organizer! The deadline to apply is less than 1 week away. Learn more and apply by Monday, August 8 by sending in a resume and cover letter to jobs@350pdx.org. This will be a temporary (1 year) part time (20 hours/week) organizing position in our Staff Collective (ideal start date Sept 12).

– Dineen O’Rourke, 350PDX Campaign Manager

Hey,

We’re excited to announce that 350PDX is hiring! We recently received some surprise funding for a specific position to support the national People Vs Fossil Fuels campaign, so we’re currently hiring a National Fossil Fuels Organizer. This will be a temporary (1 year) part time (20 hours/week) organizing position in our Staff Collective.

Learn more and apply here!

People Vs. Fossil Fuels is an impressive coalition of over 1,200 groups across the country who are pressuring the Biden administration to declare a climate emergency and stop the federal approval of all new fossil fuel projects.

Now more than ever, we need simultaneous bold action on the local and federal levels. We know the only way we can achieve this is by building a massive people-powered movement that can make change we need. With this new position, we’re excited to collaborate with groups across the country and bring back actions we can all take together here locally.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to jobs@350pdx.org by August 8. We will review applications after that date. September 12 is our ideal start date for this position, but we are flexible. If you know of others who would be a good fit for this position, please forward this to them!

We are looking forward to hearing from you and continuing to grow our movement together. With excitement,

350PDX Staff Collective

350PDX is committed to building justice and equity within our organization. We strive to build a workplace that values a diversity of approaches and perspectives, where everyone is treated fairly and enjoys working together. Research shows that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), women, trans, and nonbinary people, and other members of communities on the front lines of the climate crisis are less likely to apply for jobs for which they don’t meet 100% of the qualifications exactly as described in the job announcement. The best person for this job may be new to our movement or our sector, or may bring key experience and skills from a different background than what we’ve suggested in the job description. We enthusiastically welcome and encourage your application, even if you’re not sure you meet each one of the qualifications we’ve described.
