Tell the DEQ to prioritize climate justice through the Climate Protection Program

In Dec 2021, the OR Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) passed the Climate Protection Program (CPP) — an ambitious plan that requires 50% emissions reductions in Oregon’s largest polluting facilities by 2035, provides direct economic and environmental benefits to frontline communities, and more. Frontline communities and other stakeholders provided strong community input on the CPP when it was initially passed. But during the rule-making process to implement the plan, community-based and environmental justice groups have not been included, and the rules that the DEQ are proposing for the CPP are missing key climate justice elements.

Join us in reminding the DEQ that Oregonians care about environmental and climate justice. Write a comment telling DEQ we want the CPP to focus on the original goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, providing meaningful investments to benefit Oregonians, and holding big polluters accountable.

Please make a brief comment to the DEQ before October 13 (note the new date).

CALL SCRIPT

“Hi _____. My name is _____ , I live in ______. I’m calling because I am urging you to use your power as our local health authority to fight for air quality standards for our community. I’m concerned about appliances that leak dangerous methane gas and toxic pollutants in the buildings in our community, and I think it’s time for the County to take bold action. Pollution from our stoves, heaters, and fireplaces can cause conditions like asthma and heart failure. Please take action on this important issue.”

Shade Equity Social

Mon, Oct 16, 6-8pm — Rebuilding Center Workshop (3639 N Mississippi Ave) – RSVP here

It’s time for another Shade Equity Social! Join 350PDX on Monday, October 16th from 6-8 pm @ the Rebuilding Center Workshop (3639 N. Mississippi Ave). At our last Shade Equity Social, 50+ folks tackled some big issues like funding and support for planting and maintaining more trees, the perceived tension between green infrastructure and development, and building political power.  These discussions highlighted the need to dig a little deeper into the tension between building more housing and maintaining our urban forests  – summarized in this helpful synthesis.

Since that time, this issue has gained even more prominence (see this letter to the Governor regarding the HPAC’s recommendation to gut local tree codes).  At our October 16th Shade Equity Social, we will focus on crafting a new narrative in which housing density, green infrastructure and urban forests can co-exist.  We’ll welcome guests from the sustainable development community to discuss approaches to expanding housing in Oregon that support healthy ecosystems and healthy communities. Food & drinks provided. Families are welcome & child care provided. Please register for the event.

350PDX October Action Night

Wed, Oct 18, 6-8pm — 350PDX office (3625 N Mississippi Ave) – RSVP here

350PDX has monthly, in person gatherings in our offices where you can take action, meet other folks in the climate justice community, and learn more about our campaigns and how to get involved! Food and drink is provided. At this October’s action night, our main programming will be a presentation to inform us about the harm created by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum and why we should care about free trade agreements in the climate justice movement!

OR Sierra Club Webinar: Forest Biomass, Oregon and Beyond

Thurs, Oct 19, 5pm — virtual (register here)

Join a webinar on Oct 19 for the Global Day of Action on Big Biomass. As we work for a just transition from fossil fuels to cleaner, renewable energy, what are the realities and tradeoffs we need to understand? Burning forest thinnings or plantation trees for large-scale energy production has big impacts on ecosystems, climate, and communities. What are the ecological and climate costs of ramping up and subsidizing biomass utilization for energy, biofuels, and other applications in Oregon? How do policies on the West Coast tie into the bigger picture of U.S. and global policies, and how can we advocate for climate solutions that protect, rather than harm, our forests?

This topic is especially important to learn about as we gear up to fight the Drax Group, a corporation planning to develop a dangerous new biomass pellet plant in Longview, Washington.

Stop the Money Pipeline Training:  Worker Power, the Labor Movement and Climate Justice

Tues, Nov 14, 4:00PM – 5:30PM – learn more & rsvp here

Join Stop the Money Pipeline for a virtual training in the Broadening our Ideas on Climate Justice series: Worker Power, the Labor Movement and Climate JusticeIn this workshop, we’ll dive into why we need a powerful low-carbon labor movement to successfully take on the massive challenge that fossil capital poses to achieving climate justice. Since the 1970’s, the Right’s strategy has been to pit labor against the environment, threatening that any action on climate or the environment would mean lost jobs. At the same time, worker rights, protections and organizing power have been bludgeoned. We can’t have climate justice without labor justice. Partnering with leaders in the labor and climate movements, together we’ll learn how to build solidarity between our movements to win a carbon-free world where we can all lead good, dignified lives.

This workshop is part of a series, and all four are designed for people who are actively engaged in the climate movement. Organizers, staff (of all levels) with NGOs, volunteer leaders―if you are playing an active role in the climate movement, these trainings are for you.

News & Updates

Donate to the Art Sale for Climate Justice

We’re excited to announce we’ll be doing our end of year Art Sale for Climate Justice fundraiser for the fourth year running! We’ll be selling donated pieces of art with all proceeds going to 350PDX to help us hit our much needed end of year fundraising target of $100,000. Are you an artist? Do you have artist friends or family? We’re looking for donations of anything from oil paintings to postcards, sketches to sculptures. The art can be climate themed or totally unrelated. Price range can be anywhere from $5 to $500 (or more, although for reference, last year’s best-selling items were in the $20-$100 range). We’d be happy to give an in-kind tax-deductible donation receipt for the piece you donate.

Submit an art piece here, by early November. This year, we’ll be repeating the very successful in-person art sale night in December, to complement the online sale platform, so watch out for that!

Communities in the Blast Zone Coming Together

Do you live in the blast zone of Zenith’s oil trains? Use this map to find out. If you do, call and write to the City of Portland and share that you live in the blast zone and are concerned for your safety. You can also pick up a yard sign to have in your front yard or apartment window to educate your neighbors about the blast zone and what they can do to #StopZenith. Send an email to stopzenith@350pdx.org to coordinate receiving a yard sign from one of our team members.

The 350PDX Fossil Fuel Resistance Team is also helping folks hold Neighborhood Parties to educate their community about the issue, reach out to dineen@350pdx.org and lisebethjacobs@gmail.com to learn more.

Thousands of peaceful, nonviolent climate activists showed up to unleash a #ClimateShutDown in the heart of NYC, during Wave of Actions to End Fossil Fuels this past September leading up to the UN Climate Ambition Summit. Nearly 200 of these activists were arrested and are now calling for support for their legal fund. A movement lawyer is representing arrestees for a reasonable rate, but they still need around $6,500 to cover legal costs. Can you donate to help cover the costs?

In love and gratitude,

The 350PDX staff
