Candidate statement:
My approach to climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability would focus on practical investments that improve Portland’s environment while also providing value to residents. I believe environmental policy should be measured not only by its goals, but by whether it produces meaningful results and makes good use of public resources.
I would support expanding tree canopy and shade in neighborhoods that need it most, improving public transportation and pedestrian infrastructure, and investing in energy efficiency that can reduce long-term costs for residents and businesses. I would also support making Portland’s buildings more energy efficient when the requirements are practical, predictable, and paired with ways to reduce the financial burden on property owners and tenants.
I would also support looking for opportunities where environmental improvements and economic development can work together. This could include incentives for businesses that invest in cleaner technology, energy efficiency, and sustainable production, particularly when those investments create jobs and strengthen Portland’s economy. I would also support improving the efficiency of city operations, including transportation, buildings, and energy use, before asking taxpayers to fund entirely new programs.
Environmental justice should mean that all Portland neighborhoods have access to clean air, safe public spaces, reliable transportation, trees, and protection from environmental hazards. I would prioritize investments based on where the need is greatest rather than applying the same approach everywhere. I would also prioritize improving the health of the Willamette River and Portland’s natural areas while recognizing the importance of the river and industrial areas to our economy.
Climate resilience should also be part of how we plan for major events, including earthquakes, extreme heat, and other emergencies. Most importantly, I would want the city to measure the results of its environmental investments. Programs should have clear goals, transparent spending, and regular reviews to determine what is working. We can pursue meaningful environmental progress while keeping Portland affordable, sustainable, and economically competitive.
