Momentum Workshop A Success!

The difference in temperature between now and the last ice age is only five degrees. We are on track to have a four degree warmer world by the end of this century, according to a new report. This past Saturday, 350PDX hosted a workshop for Portlanders to discuss what we can do about this climate crisis. Contact us if you’d like to pitch-in.

Last Saturday, October 17, over 100 volunteers showed up to talk about a series of actions that will be carried out between now and December, 2015. This series of actions is called the “Path Through Paris” because, in December, world leaders will meet in Paris to try and address the climate crisis.

There is real urgency to act now. A new report shows that the world may be on track to warm up by 4 degrees by the end of the century. It may be hard to understand why that matters. NASA helps put this temperature change in perspective:

As the Earth moved out of ice ages, “the global temperature rose a total of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius over about 5,000 years.” — NASA

An increase of 4 to 7 degrees can mean the difference between living in a frozen world versus today’s world. Imagine a world that is 4 degrees warmer. This dramatic increase in temperature is part of what people refer to as the ‘climate crisis.’

Last Saturday, October 17, over 100 volunteers showed up to talk about a series of actions that will be carried out between now and December, 2015. This series of actions is called the “Path Through Paris” because, in December, world leaders will meet in Paris to try and address the climate crisis.

At 350PDX’s meeting, small-groups talked about what kind of actions people would like to see happen, such as those that would include arts and crafts and family-friendly events. The hope is that by organizing massive displays of people power, we can encourage local, state, and national leaders to take action on climate change.

The timing couldn’t be better. Portland Mayor Charlie Hales is drafting a Fossil Fuel Policy. He wants to pass it by the end of December, 2015. A strong show of support from the community for alternatives to fossil fuel infrastructure can encourage the City of Portland to continue being a leader on the climate crisis.

Well done and thank you to everyone who attended and planned the event!
