Candidate statement:
Building a city that is at the forefront of climate leadership is a top priority of mine. That means we need an holistic approach to land use, zoning, and broad policy-setting objectives that collectively contribute to climate resiliency and a reduction of fossil-fuel reliance. Particular interests include an aggressive drawdown at the CEI Hub of fossil fuels and other potential hazardous materials that would threaten the river and the community in the event of an earthquake, protecting our urban forests, and supporting funding for transit. I’ll continue to promote the develop of densification of the city to allow for more people to live a car-free life. I’m actively developing a data center ban policy framework with Councilor Koyama Lane, because I believe that the city needs to lead on ensuring that when we add renewable energy to the grid it should contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, not serve data center load. Broadly, it is my commitment that when we approach climate policy we do so in partnership with the climate movement.
I have a strong interest in building the administrative capacity to implement climate policy, with an eye toward developing a new Climate Action Plan that meets the moment. Most immediately I believe that administrative capacity needs to be vested in the Sustainability Office, and adopting policies that empower and protect it. As a councilor I will continue to pursue oversight of the City Administration when they violate these policies, or attempt to undermine the will of council or the community in advancing real climate solutions for our city.
