This Saturday, join 350PDX, the Indigenous Environmental Network, Breach Collective, and Portland Youth Climate Strike for a Community Climate Action Gathering! We’re bringing people together from a wide array of fossil fuel resistance campaigns — from the local fight against Zenith Energy to the national-level work of People vs. Fossil Fuels. Join us to learn more about these campaigns, and how you can plug in.
Whether you’ve been engaged in one (or more!) of these campaigns or it’s your first time getting involved, this event is for you. We’ll have different stations where folks can write letters to representatives, paint a banner for an upcoming action, screenprint a PDX fossil fuel resistance design onto a patch or a t-shirt that you bring, and more!
Join us this Saturday for an afternoon of climate action and community fun!
WHEN: this Saturday, March 18th, 12-2pm
WHERE: 2nd floor of the Lloyd Center (1405 Lloyd Center, Portland)
Read on to learn about the campaigns being represented at the event:
The Stop Zenith Energy campaign
The CEI Hub is a six-mile stretch of old tank farms, located in NW Portland along the Willamette River. The CEI Hub holds more than 90% of all liquid fuel in Oregon. The entire CEI Hub is in an earthquake liquefaction zone. Located within the CEI Hub is Zenith, the source of dangerous oil trains plowing through our communities. Despite years of public outcry against Zenith’s dangerous operations, on October 3, the City of Portland quietly approved a Land Use Compatibility Statement (LUCS) — giving Zenith the green light for five more years of oil trains and all the threats it presents in our communities. There are over 20 groups and organizations tackling this climate villain, and they need our support to bring some joy and creativity to the movement! Breach will be hosting a screenprinting station where you can take home your very own PDX fossil fuel resistance patch, or bring a t-shirt to print on.
Portland Youth Climate Strike’s statewide push for climate action
Portland Youth Climate Strike is working on a statewide push for climate action using our climate pledge and other avenues to engage our elected leaders in climate justice. The Portland Climate Pledge is a commitment for local and regional leaders to embrace democracy, end new investment in fossil fuel infrastructure, listen to youth voices, and other actions we outline as necessary to be a climate champion.
The People vs Fossil Fuels Coalition’s campaigns
The People vs. Fossil Fuels is a coalition of over 1,200 organizations working together towards a common goal of ending the era of fossil fuels. Our demands include declaring a Climate Emergency to rapidly advance just, renewable energy, Ban Federal Fossil Fuel Leasing, to end onshore and offshore drilling, and stopping the Federal Approval of All New Fossil Fuel Projects and Exports. Biden recently approved the Willow Project, a major oil drilling operation to be constructed on Alaska’s North Slope that has been loudly opposed by the environmental and climate justice community, including Sovereign Iñupiat for a Living Arctic and Alaska Wilderness League. Join us on Saturday to learn how we can take action against Biden’s decision and work towards national climate justice.
The Stop the Plunder of the Philippines campaign
The Kalikasan Solidarity Organization is fighting to Stop the Plunder of the Philippines and hold our government accountable for its role in the plunder of Filipino people, lands, and resources. U.S.-based multinational corporations like Chevron, Boeing, Tesla, and JP Morgan Chase are all making super profits by looting the Philippines, and the Oregon State Treasury invests our money in all of them. From displacing Indigenous communities and destroying their homes and ancestral lands to build open pit mines, to profiting off the sale of weapons that the Philippine government uses to repress and kill its own citizens fighting for their rights, these corporations and those who defend and invest in their criminal operations have blood on their hands.
Meet on the 2nd floor of the Lloyd center for the gathering (at the red star in the above map)
Hope to see you there,
Eloise Navarro, 350PDX National Fossil Fuels Organizer
