Fossil Fuel Resistance Team

Our team continues to work together with our partners on our 3 main campaigns: fighting Zenith Energy’s dangerous oil-by-rail facility, fighting the GTN Xpress fracked gas pipeline expansion, and advocating for a clean air standard at Multnomah County. 2023 was a big year for our Fossil Fuel Resistance team and campaigns, and we plan to keep fighting and win big in 2024. It’s a great time to join us!

Jan 31:  Rumble on the River Educational Community Forum – Nuclear Power Is NOT A Climate Fix

Join us Wednesday, January 31 at 6 p.m. at the Multnomah Friends Meetinghouse (4312 SE Stark) for our 12th community forum in the Rumble on the River series! The panel will discuss the inherent problems with this energy source, national and regional project proposals, pro-nuclear legislation and funding, small modular nuclear reactors, relationship to arms proliferation, and the Hanford nuclear site–considered to be the most contaminated site in the Western Hemisphere.

Communities in the Blast Zone coming together

Do you live in the blast zone of Zenith’s oil trains? Use this map to find out. If you do, call and write to the City of Portland and share that you live in the blast zone and are concerned for your safety. You can also pick up a yard sign to have in your front yard or apartment window to educate your neighbors about the blast zone and what they can do to #StopZenith. Send an email to stopzenith@350pdx.org to coordinate receiving a yard sign from one of our team members.

We’re also helping folks hold Neighborhood Parties to educate their community about the issue, reach out to dineen@350pdx.org and lisebethjacobs@gmail.com to learn more.

Take action: Fight for Clean Air in Multnomah County

Multnomah County has a huge opportunity to fight back against the gas industry and enact policies that ensure cleaner and safer air for us all to breathe. The problem? They’re stalling, and need to hear from us to take this bold action. Join us in calling and emailing Multnomah County Commissioners to say we need Clean Air Quality Standards NOW! Learn more here.

GET CONNECTED: Our next meeting is in person on Tuesday, January 23 at 5:30 pm, in person at the 350PDX office (3625 N. Mississippi Ave). It’s a great time to join the team! Reach out to Dineen and Melanie to get plugged in and schedule an orientation meeting: dineen@350pdx.orgmelanie@350pdx.org

Forest Defense Team

BIOMASS CAMPAIGN:  On January 8th, the Forest Defense Team co-hosted a movie night at the Clinton Street Theater, along with the Fossil Fuel Resistance Team and the NW Forest Climate Alliance. Over 100 people gathered to watch “Burned: Are trees the new coal?” a documentary by the Dogweed Alliance about the biomass pellet industry in the American southeast and its ecological, community and climate impact. Drax, one of the villains of the movie, has proposed building a wood pellet processing and export facility in Longview, Washington and we’re mounting a campaign to stop it.  Learn more and take action at our new webpage: www.350pdx.org/ax-drax.  If you missed the movie – good news!  The Burned website lets you stream or download the movie.

And, here are four quick actions that our friends in the Dogwood Alliance recently shared that support the national and international resistance to the false climate solution of woody biomass energy:

URBAN FOREST CAMPAIGN:  We are thrilled to report good news in our ongoing Shade Equity campaign, whose primary goal is securing funding for street tree maintenance. Commissioner Carmen Rubio recently proposed using money generated by the Portland Clean Energy Fund to fund maintenance of street trees throughout Portland! While this is not yet a done deal (stay tuned for advocacy opportunities!) it is a huge step in the right direction of creating a more equitable urban forest for all Portland residents. And, it’s awesome that 350PDX’s past work to pass the PCEF program is now helping us win our climate justice campaigns.

FUN TOGETHER: The Forest Defense Team had a great time at our annual team holiday party, which included wonderful food and drink, tree-themed games and a spirited white elephant gift exchange. Thanks to everyone on the team for all your contributions in 2023!

GET CONNECTED:  We meet every first and third Monday of the month. Our next team meeting is on Monday, Feb 5th from 6:00pm-7:30pm over Zoom. Contact BrennaFelice, or Tyler for meeting info and to get involved with the team.

Policy Team

350PDX’s newest volunteer-run team — the Climate Justice Policy Team — is building on the work of the City/County Watchdog Team and 350PDX’s work to advocate for strong legislation that moves us toward a just and sustainable future. In addition to keeping an eye on our city and state political leaders as the City/County Watchdog Team did, the Policy Team is also playing a bigger role in organizing Portlanders to integrate a climate justice focus into all policy decisions at the city and state levels.

Last year, we organized hundreds of people to call, email, and meet with their representatives during the 2023 Oregon Legislative Session — helping pass a Climate Resilience Package dedicating $90 million to climate action — and gathered thousands of signatures to help pass Measure 26-228 for city charter reform. Through the Policy Team, we’ll build on this momentum to create a more powerful block of Portlanders organizing for strong climate policies.

350PDX February Action Night – Feb 7, 6-8pm at our office (3639 N Mississippi Ave) – learn more and sign up here

Join us for our monthly 350PDX Action Night, a monthly in-person gathering at our office where new and seasoned people interested in the climate justice movement gather to network, take action, and organize for the future! Our February Action Night will be about our state legislative policy priorities for this year. Join us to learn about our priority bills, take action to speak up about them, and participate in training regarding how to talk to legislators.

Jan 29 Virtual Training: How a bill becomes a law in Oregon – learn more and register here

Jan 29, 2024, at 7-8PM on zoom — 350PDX is hosting a virtual training on “How a bill becomes a law in Oregon” right before Oregon’s 2024 short legislative session begins. Learn how bills are made, how to track them through the legislative session, and how to make your voice heard. In recent years, Oregon has passed some exciting legislation relating to climate justice and reducing our state’s environmental impact. We’ll share about some of the climate bills you will want to follow this session and show how you can get involved in policy advocacy.

GET CONNECTED: The Climate Justice Policy Team’s January meeting is on Weds Jan 23 at 6:30–8pm on zoom. Reach out to Cherice (350PDX Policy Manager) at cherice@350pdx.org to join the meeting, or sign up here to join the Policy Team. You can also reach out to Cherice to receive more frequent email updates about the legislative session this year.

Arts Team

The 350PDX Arts Team took a surprise day off from artbuilds, due to weather on January 14. So the art build planned for February 11 is especially important — we’ll catch up with the scheduled tree puppets’ rehabilitation, complete Mr Capitalist puppets, and other timely tasks, as well as moving supplies into our new space. Ideas for April’s Earth Day will be discussed.

Creative Team

The Creative Team uses storytelling to make the climate justice movement irresistible. We’ve finished gathering submissions for a writing and art contest we’re hosting with the Breach Collective, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Here Together Oregon — Flash Futures PNW: A Climate Fiction & Art Contest. Now we’re working on selecting submissions to add to a zine that we’ll be publishing in the spring!

SW Team

Welcome to the Southwest Neighborhood Team, which includes neighborhoods on the south and west sides of Portland. Our street corner demonstrations continue weekly in January, raising awareness of the climate emergency. These sign-waving events take only one hour of your time, once a week. Street corner demonstrations in January are scheduled for every Monday from 12 noon – 1 p.m. at SW Multnomah Blvd. and SW 35th Ave. in Multnomah Village. Street parking is available or take the bus or ride your bike. We have extra signs to share.

Are you planning Brown Bags at work, or programs for your civic or social group? Consider scheduling one of our series of dynamic presentations on climate change.  The themes for the one-hour programs include: How to Save Our Planet, How to Replace Fossil Fuels, How to Rewild Our Planet, and How to Save Our Oceans. To schedule a presentation, please contact Pat Kaczmarek at patk5@msn.com.

GET CONNECTED: Join our next monthly meeting on Monday, February 12th, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Zoom. A link will be sent out to SW Team members prior to our meeting. To get involved in our outreach actions, please contact Pat Kaczmarek at patk5@msn.com, or visit https://350pdx.org/campaigns/sw-neighborhood-team.

Washington County Team

Our team hosts monthly sign waving and film events, tabling for climate justice in the neighborhood, and lots more! This month we started our new year with our second annual group hike at Chehalem Ridge Park. At our monthly online meeting, we learned about Hillsboros’s recent comprehensive greenhouse Gas Assessment and how that will pave the way for State and Federal funds for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in Hillsboro. Our sign waving team expects to be in action in Hillsboro on Saturday, January 20 from 10am to noon – check our Facebook page for more details. We are beginning work to partner with local groups to create an Earth Day event, and we are discussing whether to continue our work on public film events.

GET CONNECTED:   We always welcome newcomers to our regular monthly 6:30pm second Tuesday (online) meetings and at all our events. Our next online meetup wil be on February 13. Contact Debby (debbygactivism@gmail.com) for the address if you’d like to attend.

Brooklyn Neighborhood Team

The Brooklyn Neighborhood Team has been busy spreading the word about Zenith Energy and distributing yard signs throughout the neighborhood. We’ve also been supporting a new cargo bike sharing scheme in the neighborhood, to help folks moving into the new apartment buildings not need to rely so much on cars.

GET CONNECTED:  Join our Brooklyn Climate Action Team mailing list here to get 1-2 emails a month with local action alerts. Know someone in our neighborhood? Forward this email onto them! Any questions, contact chris@350pdx.org.

Outreach Team

We’re relaunching our Outreach Team: a group of folks trained up and ready to do a variety of outreach activities, such as tabling in the community; putting posters up around the city; giving out flyers outside big events; wheatpasting; giving community presentations.
