Farmworkers deserve overtime pay!
So much is on the line for Oregon farmworkers this legislative session. Farmworkers have delivered for us throughout the pandemic, it is time we deliver for them and obtain farmworker overtime pay!
Frontline communities, including migrant, Latinx, and communities of color are hit first and worst by the climate crisis. We saw this during the Labor Day Fires; amidst the worst air quality in the world, we watched farm workers harvest grapes for wine in bandanas, while most people took refuge in their homes.
We saw this again during the June 2021 extreme heat crisis, where farmworkers were forced to work in 116 degree heat, many without access to water or shade, and led to the death of Sebastian Francisco Perez.
What is a Just Transition?
A just transition means ensuring that communities traditionally hurting the most are front and center, leading the way for their own communities.
A just transition means paying workers fair wages for the time they put in.
The rest of us already have the granted right to overtime pay. It’s time for farmworkers to have that right, too.
