This year’s COP25, from December 2 – 13, 2019, in Madrid, Spain, marks the 25th annual United Nations conference on climate change. These conferences have produced some of the most comprehensive international agreements for setting greenhouse gas emission targets and increasing the ability of countries to adapt to climate change, including the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
GPSEN and partners, OMSI and Lewiw & Clark College have created a “Virtual Bridge to COP25” to help our community engage in valuable local discussions about climate change and connect with leaders in Madrid.
In addition to our Opening Night event, on December 2, hosted at OMSI, we are hosting our Saturday, December 7, “Virtual Bridge” at Lewis & Clark College. Saturday’s theme is BlueCOP, focusing on the role of the ocean in climate change mitigation and impacts.
Our local College Presidents: Wim Wiewel, President of Lewis & Clark, and Mark Mitsui, President of Portland Community College, are in Madrid, along with Tim Carter, President of Second Nature, representing powerful work with the Climate Leadership Network.
We invite you to come to Lewis & Clark College to join us live from Madrid to share their experiences, goals, and take-aways from COP25.
Plus, we will have a local panel of speakers to help the audience connect with local engagement opportunities to the international scene:
- Steve Schell, Member and Vice Chair of the initial Oregon Land Conservation and Development Commission (1973-1976); Member Oregon Energy Facilities Siting Council (1990–1998); Organizer and Board Chair, Energy Trust of Oregon (2001−2005)
- Michael Mitton, Climate Reality Project, OR League of Conservation Voters Metro Climate Action Team
And, we will host a remote panel of experts, by the 24-hour Virtual Blue event, on the topic of Climate Change, Ocean Governance and Marine Justice challenges for Latin American and Caribean Countries: Ana Lucía Maya-Aguirre, Lisa Benjamin, Vivienne Solis, Ximena Ramos, Heidi Weiskel.
We hope it will be an engaging and educational event for all! If you wish to support our educational efforts, please consider donating.
