Vigil for the Future

November 11 @ 6:00 am - 6:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 6:00 am, repeating until November 13, 2021

What: A (mostly) silent vigil and (optional) fast, in the closing days of COP26.

When: 6am-6pm each day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Where: SW 2nd and Salmon, in front of World Trade Center

Join us to sit together as you can, or participate virtually wherever and however you choose, during the closing days of COP26 in Glasgow to…

  • Contemplate the tremendous transformation ahead of us, and the challenges and opportunities it holds;
  • Envision the future we want, and bring energy to its emergence;
  • Show solidarity with all the negotiators and activists, especially Indigenous and youth activists, in Glasgow and around the world showing up in this critical moment;
  • Meditate on all that we love and the interconnectedness of all life, with readings from e.g., Braiding Sweetgrass and All We Can Save

Those that choose to, will also fast*…

  • In solidarity with the brave youth hunger strikers that fasted 14 days in DC, and others (e.g., here, here) participating in fasts Nov 1-13 around the world;
  • To acknowledge our overconsumption, the suffering it creates now and in the future,  and the changes required to restore balance;
  • As renunciation–a willingness to let go and remove distractions–not as punishment;
  • As they wish, which can take any form, and not necessarily food or drink*

Please join us as little or as long as you are able and called to. All are welcome (family friendly).  Sign up here for a specific time, or just come as you can.

Bring your own pillow, water, umbrella, whatever you need to be comfortable.

We will follow current CDC guidelines for outdoor spaces (masks will be optional, but if unmasked please try to maintain 6 feet distance from people not in your household).

*If you choose to fast during this period, please consider the following (per scientistrebellion.com)

  • Fasting can mean renouncing other things that occupy us – work, conversation, accessing social media, sex, TV, hobbies, thinking and planning, fixing and problem solving, habits and routines. Often in fasting we stretch ourselves most by renouncing for a little while those things to which we are most attached.
  • Stay open and receptive to what this time of fasting has to show. Follow practices that encourage insight and reflection.  See more advice here.
