Stop Salmon Extinction – Rally on the River
Mobilizing people on behalf of salmon, orcas and the Snake River.
When: June 25, 2022. 10am to 3pm
Where: Willamette Park, 6500 S Macadam Ave, Portland, Oregon
Why: To collaboratively generate attention and public pressure to impact the decision by U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and Gov. Jay Inslee to include lower Snake River dam removal in the comprehensive regional salmon restoration plan they promised to deliver by July 31 this year!
Background
Conservation and fishing partners and allies are organizing for a large water- and land-based rally in in the greater Portland area to educate the public, mobilize people, generate media attention and exert pressure on key Northwest decision-makers to protect and restore endangered salmon and steelhead populations by deciding in July 2022 to remove the four lower dams as part of a comprehensive regional plan to restore salmon, uphold promises to Northwest tribes and invest in our communities and infrastructure.
This event will be free and open to the public. We are reaching out to potential partners/allies including tribal communities and Indigenous activists; Save Our wild Salmon coalition member organizations; businesses (food, outdoor recreation, fishing and more) local elected officials; and others. Committed partners so far, for example include Sierra Club, Columbia Riverkeeper, Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment, American Rivers, National Wildlife Federation, 350PDX and others.
Urgency and Opportunity
In the face of looming extinctions, decades of litigation, escalating costs and calls for justice, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and Gov. Jay Inslee and Biden Administration committed last fall to develop and deliver a comprehensive solution to protect and recover Snake River salmon and invest in the region’s communities – by July 31, 2022. This emerging leadership has opened a critical window of opportunity in 2022. Residents of the Northwest have a critical role to play to support this leadership by ensuring their Members of Congress are on board to restore the lower Snake River by removing its four deadly dams.
