In order to fight the climate crisis, it is necessary to keep the remaining fossil fuel (coal, oil, gas) reserves in the ground and create a clear pathway towards a just transition that protects communities on the frontlines of dirty energy extraction. The Pacific Northwest is currently facing many active proposals for new fossil fuel infrastructure that would put communities in danger and lock us into the fossil fuel economy and its carbon pollution for decades to come. The Fossil Fuel Resistance team is one of 350PDX’s most longstanding teams, and has been successfully working to stop new fossil fuel projects from being built in Portland and across the PNW region and beyond.

We have many active campaigns right now and would love for you to join us! Here’s a glimpse of some of the projects we’re currently working on. Together with our partners, we’ve won against big fossil fuel giant corporations before, and we are committed to continue to defeat them!

• The Jordan Cove fracked gas export terminal & Pacific Connector Pipeline, proposed to be built in Southern Oregon, what would be Oregon’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, 15 times more powerful than the retiring Boardman coal plant.
• Zenith Energy‘s tar sands oil terminal expansion in NW Portland.
• The Kalama Methanol Refinery in Kalama, WA – what would be the world’s largest fracked-gas-to-methane refinery in the world, right on the Columbia River.
• Trailwest Pipeline, a fracked gas pipeline proposed from NW Natural to be built across Wy’east, or Mt. Hood National Forest.
• Encouraging our utilities, PacificPower and PGE to limit and cease their use of coal, oil, and gas for Portland and Oregon’s electricity.
• Fighting the greenwashing of dirty and polluting “natural” (fracked!) gas.
• Supporting the case for fossil fuel companies needing to pay Risk Bonds, a fee (or “security deposit”) that would require companies to bear the full cost of damages caused by transporting, storing, or using fossil fuels.
