Last Tuesday, the Charter Commission voted on amendments they’ll ask the City Attorney to draft, which we’ll get to comment on at November’s public hearings! Here are just a few of the exciting things we expect to see in Nov:
- Establishing a citywide Climate Commitment. This reform includes making environmental justice a core value of the City, requiring the City to create and update climate action goals, and aligning future City decisions with these values, goals, and the decline of fossil fuels.
- Committing the City to participatory budgeting. This reform would distribute no less than 1% of the General Fund – which would come out to over $6 million dollars this year – through a participatory process open to the public beginning in 2026.
- Eliminating the Charter prohibition on mandatory weatherization. The City’s hands have been tied for over 40 years when it comes to this essential tool for healthy and energy-efficient buildings. With this reform, the City is free to begin creating climate-smart and equitable weatherization standards for existing buildings.
