Development Manager

Organizational Overview:
350PDX’s mission is to build a diverse grassroots movement to address the causes of climate disruption through justice-based solutions by inspiring, training and mobilizing people to act. We are a relatively young, dynamic, volunteer-driven grassroots organization with thousands of supporters. We regularly engage hundreds of people to volunteer and/or take action. Our work is significant — the nation and world need compelling examples of communities that are addressing climate disruption head-on through bold and creative measures that bring diverse people together at a time of divisiveness and insufficient state and federal action.
Position Summary:
The Development Manager serves as a key member of the staff collective and, with the support of 350PDX’s staff collective, volunteers and board of directors, will develop & implement the fundraising strategies needed to raise the financial support necessary to sustain our growing organization. The Development Manager is responsible for curating a culture of giving throughout the organization and finding innovative ways to elevate 350PDX’s mission and programs by building community and donor cultivation. Position also entails financial oversight and database maintenance.
Oversight: This position reports to the 350PDX board and staff collective.
Location: We have a flexible hybrid model where collective members can work both remotely and out of the 350PDX office in inner N. Portland, Oregon. Please note that COVID-19 vaccinations are required to work in our office.
Compensation: This is a full-time (30 hours/week) position (all of 350PDX’s full-time positions are 30 hours/week). $47,000-$49,000 per year (pending 2022 budget completion, we have pay equity across all positions). Benefits include generous PTO, flexible work hours, professional development funds, and $300 towards company health insurance.
Staff Collective & Culture: 350PDX’s staffing model is a non-hierarchical Staff Collective. There are seven members, and all are accountable to each other — there is no boss. We chose this model because it aligns with our value of distributing power and sharing accountability for the whole; it also provides us with more opportunities to build a workplace that works for us. We believe that each collective member is the expert on what they need in order to do their best work, and that everyone deserves rest, fun, and a life outside of their jobs. For us, this means:
- All of 350PDX’s full-time positions are salaried at 30 hours/week.
- Our work schedules and locations are flexible; we set our own hours based on our needs and the needs of the organization, and we can work both remotely and out of our office in inner North Portland.
- We value rest and offer 3+ weeks of paid time off each year, in addition to paid holidays and a paid summer rest period.
- Our peer management system offers each collective member 1:1 support, guidance, and accountability without the need for a top-down structure.

Development Manager Responsibilities:
Individual Donor Management (40%)
- Work with Grants & Operations Manager to create and implement annual development plan to meet specific revenue goals
- Build relationships with individual donors
- Engage with, and maintain, donor database (CRM) including data entry, segmentation, and reports
- Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising initiatives in collaboration with staff, volunteers and board members, as determined by fundraising strategy, including:
- Sustainer, summer, and year-end appeals (via mail and online)
- Coordinating other development and programmatic communications with Communications Manager and other staff
- Communicating with donors, including donor appreciation, thank you letters & receipts
Support Volunteer Fundraising (10%)
- Work with Volunteer Manager and Grants & Operations Manager to create and co-lead a volunteer Fundraising Team
Business Support (15%)
- Work with Fundraising Team to cultivate relationships with value-aligned businesses to provide both financial and programmatic support for fundraising events and campaigns (i.e. providing sponsorships, in-kind donations, or employer-sponsored volunteerism)
Outreach and Events (10%)
- Lead planning and coordination of fundraising events and house parties
- Work with staff, board members, and volunteers to research and engage in community and partner organization outreach opportunities
Additional duties include: (10%)
- Assist Grants/Ops Manager in maintaining effective documentation of programmatic efforts to aid fundraising efforts (i.e. case statement, testimonials)
- Develop process / procedures manuals where appropriate
- Respond to emergent opportunities and provide general organizational support
General Responsibilities for all Staff Collective Managers (15%) – Work within peer management accountability structure to cultivate and maintain a culture of feedback and continuous improvement.
- Collaborates with peers and Personnel Team to set clear expectations and correct performance issues as needed by providing and receiving timely, clear, candid, actionable feedback in the moment and in regular peer management meetings.
- Support the recruitment and selection of staff and volunteers. Maintains familiarity with equitable hiring practices and targeted recruitment.
- Support the development and implementation of an organization-wide strategic plan
- Support organization-wide grassroots fundraising efforts; upholds a culture that celebrates and elevates fundraising.
- Work with staff collective & JEDI Committee to guide, evaluate and implement 350PDX’s 2020 – 2022 Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Plan.
- Maintain a working knowledge of climate change issues and related social, political, legislative, regulatory and economic frameworks. Stay up to date on recent developments.

Required Qualifications:
Our ideal candidate is someone with strong written and interpersonal skills who is resourceful, flexible, self-motivated, and excited about building relationships with 350PDX’s volunteers, staff, and board members. They are interested in working in a collaborative collective environment and have a demonstrated interest in climate justice and the mission of 350PDX.
- Experience with justice and equity planning, policies, and practices. Commitment to dismantling systems of oppression that fuel the climate crisis and to understanding one’s own role as an individual in systems of privilege and power. Commitment to self and community care. Capable of conducting oneself in opposition to white supremacy culture, including when dealing with the public and in difficult situations.
- Detail-oriented, with strong organization and project management skills. Ability to plan effectively, meet deadlines and coordinate others’ involvement within a dynamic and fast-paced setting.
- Digital literacy including basic understanding of database management, maintenance, and digital filing standards. Experience using and/or managing volunteer databases
- Demonstrated understanding of basic financial management including budgeting, funding sources, expenditures, and practices for maintaining financial solvency.
- Experience drafting and implementing proposals and plans along with stakeholders using a collaborative decision-making model. Experience or interest in collaborative or consensus-based decision-making.
- 1-2 years experience in nonprofit management or fund development, including coordinating or supporting an individual donor campaign and writing mission driven fundraising content or similar experience.
Desired Attributes:
- Skill and experience with digital organizing and communications
- Proficiency in web content management, social media, e-marketing tools
- Familiarity with the local donor communities
- Experience with events management and foundation relations
- Experience with volunteer management and/or willingness to work with volunteers
