As summer reaches its height we have a fairly quiet newsletter for you this week. It’s a great time to enjoy the Oregon outdoors, but also a great time to jump into the climate movement – especially with the upcoming Climate Strike (come to the Aug 6 General Meeting to get plugged in!).

  • Summer Appeal

    We are so grateful for all the amazing support we have seen for our 2019 summer appeal! We are SO CLOSE to our $15,000 goal and today is the LAST DAY to make your contribution count towards it! We are currently at 85% of our goal. Please help us with this final push!

  • Do you have Non-Profit Development experience?

    350PDX could use your help! We are seeking an experienced development or non-profit professional to volunteer with our development committee. In the coming year 350PDX is going to be stepping up our game. We will be taking on more campaigns, training more volunteers for leadership roles in the movement, and navigating the political landscape of the 2020 election cycle. Collaborating with experienced volunteers to assist in the planning and implementation of our development plan is crucial to sustain our growth. The committee is currently made up of two board members and 1 staff. Committee members must be able to commit to 2-10 hours per month, meeting approximately every other week with flexible scheduling. This could be a great way for you or someone you know to contribute to the climate justice movement! Please email ashley@350pdx.org if interested. Thank you!

  • Help needed for the Multnomah Days Parade!

    Want to march in a parade raising awareness of the climate crisis? This is your chance! Marching in this parade with the 350PDX Southwest Team is a wonderful opportunity for someone new to the movement and for seasoned veterans both to practice having a visual impact in support of the Climate Movement. The parade is just a 20 minute walk and hundreds will see our message.

    When – Meet at 9:30 AM, Saturday, August 17. (Parade begins at 10:00 AM)

  • Environmental Justice Tour of Portland’s Sacrifice Zone

    Thurs Aug 8, 9:00AM @ Meet in front of Montgomery Ward Building in NW Portland (2757 NW Wardway, Portland)
    We will hear the voices of the many groups who once lived and worked in historical river communities. We’ll car pool to the many forgotten sites and consider the policies that made this possible.   • Summer Appeal

    After a year of staff transitions and some internal restructuring, I am excited to refocus on building this grassroots movement through more volunteer orientations, general meetings, skills trainings and making it easier for new and existing volunteers to take part in a range of meaningful, effective climate action. It takes resources to run an organization like 350PDX, from organizing the upcoming Climate Strike, to fixing our website, to mobilizing hundreds of people at Zenith hearings, to supporting volunteer teams.

    Please consider giving today to keep our people-powered movement moving forward. We only have less than two weeks of the summer appeal. So far we have had 50 individual contributions. Will you help us get that number up to 70 individual donations by the end of this week? Thank you! — Chris

  • Strategic Planning is Underway!

    For over 8 hours on Sunday, 350PDX volunteer leaders, board and staff kicked off this year’s strategic planning process, looking to plan out the direction of 350PDX for the next 18 months. These were just very initial conversations setting up the framework (here’s the framework for those interested), and much of the deeper strategy planning will be done by volunteer teams themselves in the coming months. Interested in getting involved, and have experience in strategic planning or creating inclusive processes? Join the Strategic Planning Committee! Email lucy@350pdx.org.

  • Welcome to new 350PDX board members!

    Welcome to new board members Anaïs Tuepker, Jamie Pang, and Jordon Lee. As we grow the board to a sustainable size, we will maintain interim leadership roles. Deb Lev will be serving as interim board president and Allyse Heartwell will be serving as interim vice-president.

  • Calling all web designers / developers!

    The time has come to give our website a revamp. Over the next few weeks/months the Communications Team will be updating the structure, content and design of our current website, to make it look less like 350pdx.org, and more like 350seattle.org, mn350.org, or just 350.org. We use WordPress and I’m looking for someone with development / design skills to help us along, potentially migrating a theme, or just customizing our current theme. Please email chris@350pdx.org!   • Help needed for the Multnomah Daze Parade!

    The 350PDX Southwest Neighborhood Team is marching again in this year’s parade. They need at least 15 people able and willing to carry signs, props and puppets for an approx 20 minute march. The SW team will have plenty of items to carry, so no need for people to bring their own signs. Join us in spreading the word about the urgency to switch from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. The theme on this day will be “All Hands Needed ~ Heal the Earth“.

Weekly Update – July 16 2019

I’m back, and so is Dineen! We’re back at full power and ready to jump back into summer organizing. Thank you all for your patience for the past few weeks 🙂

  • Summer Appeal

    Last month was the hottest June in recorded history on Earth. The planet has been heating up, but our activism has been too. From the Portland Clean Energy Fund, to our fight against fossil fuel infrastructure, from new campaigns on the Green New Deal and Transportation Justice, to continuing work on ensuring we center climate justice in all our organizing, 350PDX has never been so active. New volunteers are joining every week, and new opportunities, partnerships and campaigns are popping up all the time. But all this activity takes resources, staff time, and money.

    Donations from supporters like you keep our movement alive and growing. We are in the midst of our summer appeal and we have set a goal to raise $15,000 by July 31st. AND the 350PDX Board will match the first $6,000 raised!! (Thanks Board!)

  • Huge Zenith Public Hearing Last Night

    Last night around 500 people showed up to tell City Council to oppose the expansion of the Zenith Energy tar sands terminal – see OPB article here. Mayor Ted Wheeler, Commissioner Chloe Eudaly and Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty heard testimony from local organizations and individuals and responded to questions. They gave strongly worded responses, but until those words are turned into action we will not let up the pressure on the City Council! 350PDX demanded the City deny any upcoming permits; the City work with DEQ to increase scrutiny on this project; the City implement the fossil fuel zoning codes we passed in 2016; and the City place an immediate stop work order on Zenith’s operations!   • Hike the Divide – First Look Screening

    Wed July 17, 6:30PM – 8:30PM @ 350PDX Fellowship Room, 1820 NE 21st Ave, Portland
    Come be part of the very first audience for Hike the Divide: A Conversation about Climate Action on the Continental Divide Trail! The filmmaker, Connor DeVane, is a 350PDX and Sunrise Movement volunteer. The film is 80mins and will begin at 6:30pm. This is a free event.

  • Training: Inclusion For LGBTQ+ People In The Climate Movement

    Sat July 20, 3:00PM – 5:00PM @ 350PDX Room 201 (upstairs), 1820 NE 21st Ave
    RSVP here. At this training, we will explore the nuances of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the climate movement. We will explore the basics of LGBTQ+ terminology, practice using marginalized pronouns, explore how LGBTQ+ are often excluded, and how we can make our spaces more welcoming and inclusive to the variety of LGBTQ+ experiences.
