Candidate statement:

As a lifelong bicycle commuter and a former TriMet bus driver, I am deeply committed to addressing climate change through sustainable transportation. My priorities focus on reducing emissions and increasing access to environmentally friendly transit options. I will advocate for the electrification of buses, improved biking infrastructure, and safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists. This means working with PBOT and TriMet to prioritize bus rapid transit and create protected bike lanes, which will reduce car dependency and make our streets safer for everyone.

Another priority is the transition to renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. I will push for stricter regulations on the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub and oppose further oil-by-rail shipments through Portland. I will work to support solar power initiatives by fast-tracking permits for green buildings and lobbying for stronger net metering policies to ensure faster returns on investments in solar energy. I also support using the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund (PCEF) to fund projects that increase energy efficiency and resiliency, particularly in frontline communities disproportionately affected by climate change.

Environmental justice is central to my platform. I believe that those who are most impacted by climate change should be the ones leading the solutions. I will prioritize initiatives that provide clean air, affordable energy, and safe housing to historically marginalized communities. Expanding the city’s shade equity efforts—by planting trees in neighborhoods most affected by urban heat islands—will be critical to this.

I strongly oppose freeway expansions, particularly those that would further harm communities already disproportionately affected by pollution, such as the proposed expansion of I-5 through North Portland. Instead, I will work with local advocacy groups to implement solutions that prioritize active transportation and reduce vehicle emissions. My commitment to sustainable urban development includes working to ensure that transportation planning and housing policies align with our goals for reducing Portland’s carbon footprint.

In sum, my approach to climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability is rooted in equity and community involvement. By investing in clean energy, improving public transportation, and fighting for the health and safety of our most vulnerable residents, I will ensure that Portland leads the way in creating a more sustainable and just future for all.

Will you ensure the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) remains climate-focused in line with what voters intended?
