John J Goldsmith — Candidate for City Council, District 4
Candidate statement:
My climate justice platform is rooted in the CLEAN-GREEN&SERENE political philosophy. I aim to establish a closed economy in Portland, prioritizing essential needs like healthy food, ample shelter, clean energy, transportation, and a high quality of life for its residents. For instance, I would introduce a “Fast Fashion Tax” on local clothing companies that rely on polysynthetics instead of natural fibers. Additionally, the tax would apply to companies using animal products over natural fibers, due to the carbon footprint of such materials, which contradicts our ‘carbon-neutral’ objectives. The issues with Zenith and Oil by rail are critical, and Portland’s response has been too slow. These Climate Villains need to downsize significantly along the Willamette River. We urgently require an alternative plan for improved fuel storage. I oppose freeway expansion and propose the Nation’s First mass transit incentive program, paying riders to use buses, light rail, and streetcars, potentially offering 50 cents per ride, up to a $45 monthly cap. This could create green jobs and alleviate poverty, addressing a facet of climate injustice.
Will you ensure the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) remains climate-focused in line with what voters intended?
Yes
