Candidate statement:
As a candidate for Portland City Council, I am committed to addressing the urgent challenges of climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability. My policy priorities focus on creating a resilient, equitable, and environmentally sustainable Portland for all residents.
Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub and Willamette River Protection
The CEI Hub poses a significant risk to our community and the Willamette River- as well as the Columbia downstream. I will:
• Advocate for the gradual relocation of fuel storage facilities away from the Willamette River to reduce the risk of catastrophic spills and environmental damage.
• Support the development of a comprehensive earthquake preparedness plan for the CEI Hub to mitigate potential disasters.
• Work towards stricter regulations on oil transportation by rail to protect our waterways and communities.
• Work with organizations like the Human Access Project to make the Willamette more accessible, addressing issues like the Ross Island algae bloom.
Pedestrian Safety and Walkability
Improving pedestrian safety and walkability is crucial for reducing emissions, promoting public health, and creating a more livable city. My plans include:
• Implementing an effective program to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries, with a primary focus on pedestrian safety.
• Expanding and improving sidewalk infrastructure, particularly in underserved neighborhoods and areas with high pedestrian traffic. Many portions of SW Portland in District 4 lack sidewalks.
• Increasing the number of marked crosswalks and pedestrian signals.
• Supporting the development of pedestrian-friendly streetscapes with improved lighting, wider sidewalks, and traffic calming measures.
• Advocating for lower speed limits in residential areas and high-pedestrian zones to enhance safety.
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
To address the growing impacts of climate change, I will:
• Advocate for increased funding for climate resilience projects, including green infrastructure to manage stormwater and reduce urban heat islands.
• Assure that the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) to is helping our transition to clean energy and green jobs.
Environmental Justice and Equity
Ensuring that our climate policies benefit all Portlanders, especially those in historically underserved communities, is a top priority. I will:
• Support the expansion of affordable, efficient public transit options to improve access to jobs and services for all residents.
• Advocate for the equitable distribution- and maintenance- of green spaces and parks throughout the city to improve air quality and provide recreational opportunities for all.
By focusing on these key areas, we can create a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient Portland that leads the way in addressing climate change and environmental justice.
Will you ensure the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) remains climate-focused in line with what voters intended?
Yes.
