Antonio Jamal PettyJohnBlue — Candidate for City Council, District 2

Endorsed: Shade Equity Platform

Candidate statement:

As a candidate for Portland City Council, my priorities on climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability are deeply rooted in the belief that a healthy environment is fundamental to the well-being of every community. Climate change is an urgent issue, and Portland has the potential to be a leader in addressing this crisis with bold and inclusive policies that serve all residents, particularly those most impacted by environmental harm.

**Climate Change:**
To combat climate change, I will prioritize reducing carbon emissions through aggressive action on clean energy and transportation. This includes supporting expanded public transportation, safe bike lanes, and infrastructure for electric vehicles. I will advocate for policies that incentivize renewable energy, such as solar and wind, both at the municipal and community levels. I also strongly support investing in energy efficiency for homes and businesses, with a focus on low-income housing to reduce energy costs and carbon footprints.

I will ensure that the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) remains focused on climate action, supporting projects that promote clean energy, green jobs, and climate resilience. The PCEF is a critical tool in reducing our city’s carbon emissions and must stay true to its mission of addressing both the climate crisis and social inequities.

**Environmental Justice:**
Environmental justice is a priority because the effects of climate change and pollution disproportionately affect communities of color, low-income households, and other marginalized groups. I will advocate for policies that center these communities, ensuring they are not only protected but also benefit from Portland’s climate initiatives. This includes ensuring equitable access to clean air, clean water, and green spaces.

I will work to reduce environmental disparities by supporting policies that restrict harmful industrial practices in vulnerable neighborhoods, such as improving regulations on toxic emissions and pollutants. Additionally, I will support green workforce development programs, ensuring that historically underserved communities have access to well-paying jobs in the growing clean energy sector.

**Sustainability:**
Sustainability means creating systems that allow us to live in harmony with our environment for generations to come. I will push for sustainable urban development that includes green building standards, waste reduction programs, and increased investment in urban farming and community gardens. By expanding local food systems, we can reduce transportation emissions, increase food security, and promote healthier communities.

Furthermore, I will work to make Portland a zero-waste city, supporting programs that increase recycling and composting rates while reducing single-use plastics and other pollutants.

Overall, my policies on climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability aim to create a city that is resilient, equitable, and forward-thinking, ensuring that Portland remains a livable and vibrant community for all.

Will you ensure the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) remains climate-focused in line with what voters intended?
