350PDX Weekly Update – Global Just Recovery Gathering – Apr 7 2021

Hi everyone,

This weekend, April 9-11, is the Global Just Recovery Gathering, a 3-day online event full of fun and effective training sessions, amazing activists, leaders, and artists to energize us and find ways to design a new path for a better future for all. Join us in designing a new path towards a better future for all and spread the word.

350 groups and other climate justice organizations and movements from across the world will be gathering to collectively reimagine our future, and it’s gonna be great.

For seasoned activists it’s a great place to take a step back and reconnect with our shared vision. For total newbies it’s a great place to get grounded in what the climate justice movement is all about. I’ll be there, as will a bunch of other 350PDX staff and volunteers, including our Coalition Manager Indi who will be speaking!

It’s global, so they’ve worked out a way to make it cover all timezones. You choose what sessions to attend. For the full experience, you can join a 6-hour ‘cycle’ for each of the 3 days in your desired timezone; otherwise, simply drop in for individual workshops.

Check out the amazing speaker list, and the full programme here.

  • Volunteer Survey – 2 weeks left!

It has been a full year since the pandemic changed all of our lives. It also totally changed how 350PDX operates, with all team meetings going online, staff working from home, and lots of volunteer turnover with many new people joining our activist community. We’ve spent a lot of time reacting to changing conditions and arising crises, and honestly just trying to survive as people and as an organization through an incredibly disruptive moment in history.

But with the cold, dark winter over and the end of the pandemic (hopefully) in sight, it’s time to take a step back, assess how we’re doing, and take a more proactive approach to our organizing.

But for that we need your help! We need your insights, ideas, and feedback to kickstart this process. Please spend 5-15 minutes filling in our Volunteer Activist Survey.

Whether you’re a longtime volunteer, or you’re just on our email list, all views are welcome in this survey. Deadline is April 23, but please take the time now if you are able. Thank you!

Opportunities

  • 350PDX April General Meeting

    TONIGHT Wed Apr 7, 6:00PM – 7:15PM, Online

Join us for this month’s General Meeting which is open to all and is a great place for new and existing volunteers to meet staff and other volunteers, come and hear what the other teams are up to, and to do a deep dive into a topic.

This month we’ll hear from Indi (our Coalition Manager) and Dineen (our Campaign Manager) for a big mid-legislative session update on all the bills we’re following and supporting, including the bills that are part of the Clean Energy Opportunity campaign, and have an opportunity to get involved and take some action. Register here.

We’ll also have some time for a discussion where I can hear from you all about what a post-pandemic 350PDX might look like. When do we go back to in-person meetings? What kind of virtual stuff should we continue indefinitely? Hope you can make it!

All members/supporters of 350 affiliates in North America are welcome! Whether you are a new volunteer looking to jumpstart your activism skills, just on the email list and curious about learning more, or a more experienced group member looking to stimulate thinking about new concepts and create stronger connections with peers across the 350 network, these trainings are for you! Recordings and training materials will be available.

  • Virtual Film Screening: Kiss the Ground

    Sat Apr 10, 2:00PM – 4:00PM, Online, register here

350PDX Washington County presents our first 2021 free online quarterly film in our One World Films and Conversations series. Kiss the Ground”  is an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals a beautiful and viable solution to our climate crisis. Narrated by Woody Harrelson, Kiss the Ground reveals that, by regenerating the world’s soils, we can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Using compelling graphics and visuals, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage, the film artfully illustrates how, by drawing down atmospheric carbon, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle.

Free film and great conversation with lots of expertise on climate crisis issues in the room to support in-depth conversation. **We’ll send the ZOOM link to view the movie in advance of the April 10 showing to those who have registered.
