Thank you to everyone who showed up to the youth-led Climate Strike last Friday! We called on our elected officials to take meaningful climate action and hold Portland’s Climate Villains accountable. As I marched alongside folks from every corner of the city, all of us chanting “Climate Action Now!” at the top of our lungs, I felt hopeful.
350PDX helped organize the march and festival, led an action outside NW Natural, provided the art and puppets for the march, and had no fewer than 6 booths at the festival signing folks up for our campaigns. Our Arts Team also ran a screenprinting booth giving away free shirts and posters.
To be honest, I’ve been having a hard time staying hopeful about the future. The fossil fuel industry is still the Goliath of this story, with deep influence and even deeper pockets. We’re revealing the truth about “natural” gas, but NW Natural is still spreading lies. We got the City to deny Zenith Energy a land use permit for their oil terminal expansion, but they’re still transporting oil-by-rail. The Portland Clean Energy Fund was a huge win for BIPOC communities, but it’s now under attack from the Portland Business Alliance.
It’s moments like these when I need to remind myself why I first got into this work. Like so many of us, I realized that I needed to be in community to stay hopeful in the face of climate despair. Through this work, I learned that we do have the power to take on Climate Villains and create radical change, but only when we come together. That’s why today, I’m asking for your help.
Announcing our Spring Sustaining Donor Drive
350PDX is largely community funded, and sustaining donors are key to our success. Between now and June 8th, our goal is to gain 100 new sustaining donors. Can you help keep up momentum from the Climate Strike by becoming a sustaining donor today?
Become a sustaining donor by June 8th and we’ll send you a Climate Justice Starter Kit! Each kit includes 3 zines about climate justice organizing; 2 beautiful postcards, 2 buttons, and a bookmark.
I feel so honored to be part of the 350PDX community. I’m proud that in the face of Climate Villains, we remain committed to building a people-powered, grassroots movement. Will you support our work by becoming a sustaining donor?
Thanks for all you do for climate justice,
Julia Fritz-Endres, 350PDX Communications Manager
